Overselling means selling more nominal resource allocation than the physical capacity currently reserved, based on the expectation that customers will not all use their full allowance simultaneously.
Step by step
- Track actual disk and bandwidth use across downstream resellers.
- Set product limits that reflect normal customer behaviour but leave operational headroom.
- Watch growth trends, not only today’s free space.
- Identify unusually heavy customers early and have an upgrade/fair-use process.
- Increase upstream capacity before real usage reaches a level that risks service quality.
Important
Overselling does not make resources unlimited. It is a capacity-planning strategy and becomes unsafe when sales are disconnected from monitoring.
Checks and troubleshooting
A healthy oversold service has clear thresholds for when to add capacity and does not rely on emergency deletions or arbitrary customer restrictions.
