Private nameservers let a reseller present branded DNS names such as ns1.yourbrand.tld and ns2.yourbrand.tld. They require coordination between the DNS server settings and the domain registrar.
Step by step
- Choose two nameserver hostnames under a domain you control.
- Obtain the IP addresses your upstream provider instructs you to use.
- At the registrar, create the required host/glue records for ns1 and ns2.
- Create/verify matching DNS A records in the domain zone.
- Configure the reseller nameserver settings where your WHM privileges allow it, then test delegation with a DNS checker.
Important
Creating ordinary A records alone is not always enough; parent-zone host/glue registration is required when the nameservers live beneath the same domain they serve.
Checks and troubleshooting
DNS delegation can take time to become consistent. If it fails, compare registrar glue, authoritative zone records and the nameservers assigned to the customer domain.
