A reliable WordPress installation starts with the correct domain, HTTPS, supported PHP, a dedicated database and secure administrator credentials.
Step by step
- Confirm the domain resolves to the hosting account and SSL is available.
- Install WordPress into the correct document root and avoid an unwanted /wordpress subfolder.
- Use a dedicated database/user and a strong, unique administrator password.
- Set the site URL to HTTPS, choose the correct timezone and remove unused default content.
- Update WordPress, themes and plugins, then configure backups and basic security before publishing the site.
Important
Do not use admin as the administrator username if you can avoid it, and do not install large collections of unused plugins or themes.
Checks and troubleshooting
After installation, test login, permalinks, email/forms, HTTPS and backups. A WordPress site is not fully ready simply because the homepage loads.
