Using File Manager safely

Upload, extract, edit and organise website files without accidentally breaking the live site.

File Manager lets you upload, edit, rename, copy, move, compress and delete files without an FTP application. For a primary website the document root is commonly public_html, while additional domains may use their own folders.

Step by step

  1. Open File Manager and identify the correct document root before changing anything.
  2. Enable hidden files when you need to work with files such as .htaccess.
  3. Before replacing an important file, download a copy or create a compressed archive.
  4. Upload files into the intended folder; ZIP archives can be extracted after upload.
  5. Check permissions after moving or extracting files and test the website in a new browser tab.
Important

Deleting a file from File Manager can immediately break a live site. Treat configuration files, .htaccess, wp-config.php and application environment files as sensitive.

Checks and troubleshooting

If a change causes an error, restore the file you backed up first. For permission problems, avoid setting files or folders world-writable; ask support if you are unsure.
