Domains, subdomains and document roots

Understand how hosted domains map to folders so files are published in the correct place.

The Domains interface controls which domains are attached to a cPanel account and which server folder serves each site. The document root is important: files uploaded to the wrong root will not appear on the intended domain.

Step by step

  1. Open cPanel → Domains and locate the domain.
  2. Review its document root before uploading a website.
  3. When adding a new domain, choose whether it should share an existing document root or have its own directory where the interface permits it.
  4. Point the domain DNS to the hosting service.
  5. After DNS resolves, test both HTTP and HTTPS and enable HTTPS redirection only after a valid certificate exists.
Important

Removing a domain from cPanel can affect its web and email configuration. Back up data and verify the target before removing anything.

Checks and troubleshooting

If the wrong site appears, compare the domain document root with the folder containing the intended index file, then check DNS is pointing to the correct server.
