FTP clients are useful for transferring many files, but encrypted methods should be used whenever available. cPanel can create FTP accounts restricted to specific directories.
Step by step
- Create a dedicated FTP account rather than sharing the main cPanel password when another person needs file access.
- Restrict the account to the smallest directory it needs.
- Use the hostname and connection details shown by your hosting service.
- Prefer an encrypted protocol such as SFTP or FTPS where supported.
- After the work is complete, remove temporary accounts that are no longer required.
Important
Plain FTP sends credentials without the protection provided by an encrypted transport. Never send hosting passwords through an ordinary support ticket.
Checks and troubleshooting
Connection failures are commonly caused by the wrong hostname, port, username format or passive-mode/firewall issues. Confirm the exact connection details before resetting passwords.
